PIGEON HOLES (Pages 36–37)

Bearing in mind what you already know, can you work out which job each of the suspects does at the museum?

Sir Stephen Cartwright = Chairman

Bill Cooper = Caretaker

Sam Cooper = Tour Guide

Mary Hawkins = Head of Public Relations

Dr. Elizabeth Knight = Museum

Director Prof. Richard November = Curator of Sciences

Earnest Robinson = Museum Deputy Director

Harriet Wheeler = Curator of Antiquities

You can make out the first letters of “Stephen” on one of the letters in the Chairman’s pigeon hole. You can also see that a letter addressed to the Curator of Sciences is in the “N-R” pigeon hole; only two members of staff have surnames beginning with letters in that range (November and Robinson). You already know Earnest Robinson is the Deputy Director so therefore Richard November must be the Curator of Sciences.

In the same way you can work out that Harriet Wheeler is the Curator of Antiquities because that letter is in the “W-Z” pigeon hole and Harriet Wheeler is the only member of staff with a surname beginning with one of those letters.

A pair of glasses has been returned to The Head of Public Relations. Only 4 of the suspects wear glasses and as Richard, Elizabeth and Earnest’s roles are already known, Mary must be the Head of Public Relations.

The note left with the glasses is signed “Bill” and the handwriting matches that of a note from the Caretaker at the bottom right of the pigeon holes meaning Bill Cooper must be the Caretaker.

A lost Tour Guide badge has been left in the “A-D” pigeon hole and as we know Bill Cooper is the Caretaker and Stephen Cartwright is the Chairman the badge must belong to Sam Cooper, meaning she must be the Tour Guide.
