THE CHASE (Pages 120–121)

In which room in the museum is Mary Hawkins hiding?

The Hall of Antiquities

From what the Junior Police Constables say you know that none of them saw Mary Hawkins running out of the Grand Hall and you can work out where each of them were on patrol…

• One constable gives you a clear location.

• One constable tells you they were in a room with 4 doors. The only room in the museum with 4 doors is the Gallery of Modern Art.

• One constable tells you they were reading an exhibit about how the earth was formed, Such an exhibit would only be found in the Gallery of Natural History.

• One constable tells you they were learning about planets. They must have been in the Astronomy Wing.

• Another constable tells you they were in a corridor at the front of the building. On the map you can see the only one corridor is situated at the front of the building.

• Another constable tells you they had just come out of the loo and there is only one W.C. marked on the map.

From looking at the keys on Mary’s bunch you know she only has keys to the North West, East and South Doors of the Grand Hall meaning she couldn’t have exited through the North East or Main Doors. Two of the constables where directly outside the South and North West Doors. Therefore, Mary must have unlocked the East Door of the Grand Hall, turned right down the next corridor (avoiding the patrol of the other 3 constables) and then gone into either the Hall of Insects or the Hall of Antiquities. However we know from meeting Mary earlier that she is terrified of bugs and so therefore we can deduce that she is hiding in the Hall of Antiquities.
