STAFF RECORDS (Pages 100–101)

Can you work out which employee number belongs to which member of staff?

Sam Cooper = 2404

Earnest Robinson = 0901

Bill Cooper = 9904

Richard November = 0102

Elizabeth Knight = 1101

Mary Hawkins = 2503

Stephen Cartwright = 2201

Harriet Wheeler = 1302

Using the 2 rules at the bottom of the note and the staff photographs together you can work out the employee numbers. Those working in the Public Relations Office have 03 at the end of their number. There is only 1 employee number ending in 03 and only one member of staff that we know works in the Public Relations Office so Mary Hawkins’ employee number must be 2503.

Looking at the staff photograph from 1910 we can only recognise Bill, Richard and Earnest among the group, meaning they must be the only 3 members of the current staff who began working at the museum before 1910. Only three employee numbers begin with digits that indicate the employee began working at the museum earlier than 1910 (9904, 0901 and 0102). We know from the rules that Academic Staff/Curator employee numbers end with 02 and that Richard is the Curator of Sciences therefore Richard’s employee number must be 0102; we know that Senior Staff/Director employee numbers end with 01 and that Earnest is the Deputy Director meaning his number must be 0901; and therefore Bill’s must be 9904.

Looking at the staff photograph from 1921 we can see that Bill, Richard, Earnest, Harriet and Elizabeth are all in the photograph. That must mean Harriet and Elizabeth began working at the museum between 1910 and 1921. Two employee numbers begin with digits indicating the employee began in those years (1101 and 1302). From the job coding system we can work out that Elizabeth’s (Museum Director) employee number is 1101, and Harriet’s (Curator of Antiquities) is 1302.

The 1921 photograph also tells us that the remaining suspects not in that photograph (Stephen, Sam and Mary) must have started work at the museum later than 1921. Three employee numbers begin with digits indicating the employee began at the museum later than 1921 (2201, 2404 and 2503). We already know Mary must be 2503 and from the job coding system we can work out that Stephen’s number must be 2201 and Sam’s must be 2404.
